In Episode 8, Carmen visits famous sites in San Francisco, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, and more. Kids learn about the key features of maps as they create their own brochure of San Francisco.

Activity Instructions

Kids create a brochure of San Francisco that includes a map of important sites.

Estimated Time: Two 45-minute periods

Materials Needed: Atlases or maps of San Francisco, writing materials

  1. As a group, identify the basic elements of a map such as a title, scale, compass rose, key or legend, and locator map.
  2. Instruct kids that they will be creating brochures for a tour of San Francisco. The tour will include the landmarks in “The Lucky Cat Caper”: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, and City Hall. Brochures should briefly describe each stop.
  3. Each brochure should also include a map of the tour route that includes the important map elements the class listed.
